The number of universities a student should apply to typically ranges from five to twenty, depending on their goals and the application systems involved. In some cases, it takes no more time or money to apply to five schools as it does to one. For example, in the UK, students submit a single application through UCAS for up to five universities.
Safety schools also factor in. If a student is already applying to a system (like the University of California), adding a safety within that system often requires no extra work. However, the number of applications tends to increase when a student applies to more “reach” schools. While we support students aiming high, it's important to strategically balance quantity with quality. Each additional application requiring supplemental essays adds a significant amount of work.

Below is a list of application types used by U.S. universities:
ED (Early Decision): This is considered a binding decision. If a student is accepted by their ED university, they are committed to attend and must withdraw all other applications. ED should only be considered by students with a clear first-choice school who are ready to commit early. EDII (Early Decision Two) is a second round of binding decisions that takes place after ED1.
REA (Restrictive Early Action): This is not a binding decision, but applying REA comes with restrictions. Students applying REA, apply early and receive an early decision, but they cannot apply early to other private institutions. Students must read each college’s REA policy carefully as they vary between colleges.
EA (Early Action): This is a non-binding application. Students both apply early and receive a decision early, but they are not obligated to accept an offer. EA is ideal for students with strong test scores, grades, and recommendations early in their senior year.
RD (Regular Decision): This is the application process used for most applications. Deadlines are later, giving students more time to refine their application, improve grades, and take additional standardized tests if needed. However, admission rates for RD applications are lower than they are for early applications.
